What OEM and ODM mean for a cap order

In an OEM arrangement, the buyer supplies the design and the maker produces it. In an ODM arrangement, the maker contributes design input as well, and the buyer selects and adapts from that input. The distinction matters because it decides who owns the design decisions at each stage, and a buyer should state which arrangement is intended in the first inquiry.

The company service pages name both arrangements without defining the boundary between them for any particular order, so the boundary should be agreed for the order in question. A buyer who wants full control of the design should say so. A buyer who wants design suggestions should say that instead. Either arrangement can work; an unstated arrangement is where confusion starts.

The four stages, and what to ask at each

Design is the first stage. Ask what design input is offered, what artwork is needed, and how design changes are handled before production. Sample production is the second stage: ask for the sample arrangement and any sample fee rule, and check the sample against the brief before approving it.

Manufacturing is the third stage. Ask about the quantity terms, the lead time and the production schedule for the order, and confirm them in writing. Packaging is the fourth stage: ask about label wording, pack quantity and pack format, and ask for a proof of any printed or woven label before production.

What this service does not promise on this site

This site does not turn the service names into fixed delivery standards. A service name describes what a company offers to discuss, and the agreed scope for an order is whatever the two sides confirm in writing for that order. Turnaround, capacity and delivery terms are therefore presented here as points to confirm, not as fixed commitments.

The same applies to design help. Free design services, product photography services and custom consultation services are named on the company service pages, and the free design service has its own page on this site. What those services cover for a particular order should be confirmed in the inquiry, because a service name alone does not define its scope.
